So Spencer was teasing me that for his birthday this year he wasn't sure how I was going to make as cool of a cake as last year (last year I made him a castle). It took me some time to think of a good idea but he quite liked it and it was a lot of fun to make.
Elise loves helping me cook. Especially when it comes to "cleaning up".
So I decided to make him the space shuttle. I had to make some adjustments as I went because my cakes are never quite like I picture them in my head but I still think it turned out really cool. The base is chocolate brownie, the shuttle is lemon cake, the orange liquid fuel tank was cupcakes and the two rocket boosters on the sides are rice krispies. The cupcakes had some issues so I got teased when this cake came apart because it had toothpicks, Shish Kabob sticks, a couple of butter knives, cardboard and two elastic bands. But you wouldn't guess that from looking at it so it's okay, right?
I realized when it was time to serve cake that I didn't have any candles like I thought I did so I resorted to redneck candles (matches). Although they burn down a little faster so I had to light another one when we got done singing for Spencer to blow out. The matches were pretty fun though because of the sound they make when they light is similar to a rocket sound.
We celebrated his birthday with his family at our house and then the next weekend we celebrated his and Carter's birthday at my parents with my family. I thought Carter would really like a Space Shuttle cake and since I had figured out some of the problems the first time I decided to do it again. So here is my second shuttle cake. Similar but different in a few ways. Not nearly as many extra things on the inside, partially because I used ding dongs instead of cupcakes this time. They stack much better.
No redneck candles this time but Mom bought relighting candles so it was still entertaining to watch as they waited to see what candles would relight. The only problem this time was that Carter saw the cake and asked what it was. He thought it looked fun but apparently space is not his area of expertise.
